Praised for her “staggering range of vocal alchemy” (Adam Scime, Musicworks) and described as “mindbendingly versatile” (Organ), Sarah Albu is a singer and performance maker whose work moves fluidly between different forms, genres and collaborations.
A prolific and active soloist specializing in new/experimental music, 20th-century repertoire, chamber music and free improvisation, she can be heard in settings ranging from traditional Balkan village music and ancient polyphony to film and game soundtracks, noise and psychedelic rock. Her practice integrates voice, movement, performance and spatial/visual elements through a mix of curiosity and nostalgia.
Albu’s first solo album was released independently in 2013. She is a founding member of the experimental voice collective Phth and frequently collaborates with artists working in video, installations, contemporary dance, textiles and digital media. She has premiered numerous new works and contemporary opera roles in close cooperation with composers and media artists. She has contributed to a wide array of recordings as a guest vocalist and created sound designs for dance, theatre and video projects. 2023 saw her release an album of Gayle Young’s complete vocal works, spanning from 1978 to 2021. She has been collaborating with Paramirabo since 2011.
