Canada’s preeminent composer and renaissance man R. Murray Schafer wrote this dedication for Letters from Mignon, a new ATMA recording of his works composed for mezzo-soprano Eleanor James. The program consists of three works spanning more than 30 years: Letters from Mignon, Minnelieder and Thunder: Perfect Mind.

Each piece bears witness to aspects of the enduring artistic and romantic relationship between Schafer and James. Letters from Mignon is performed by James with The Esprit Orchestra, founded by conductor/composer Alex Pauk in 1983 – the same year James and Schafer first met.
