Description
To speak of the “Lute Works” of J.S. Bach as though they were a body of music conceived and executed as a set would be historical revisionism. The extreme diversity of the sources, types of composition, and likely date of composition all weigh heavily against any notion of these pieces being a “body of work.” The fact is that these works span most of Bach’s mature musical life as well as an enormous range of musical architecture, showing the sustained and varied interest Bach devoted to the lute. Celebrated lutenist Stephen Stubbs brings several of Bach’s most wonderful works for this “extinct” instrument back to life.
