Description

In memory of the Canadian oboist Bruce Haynes who died last May, ATMA is re-issuing a recording he made on the ATMA label: François Couperin Concerts royaux, which was first released in 1999. Haynes is accompanied by Susie Napper on viola da gamba and Arthur Haas on harpsichord.• Bruce Haynes (1942-2011) was one of the pioneers of the 20th-century renaissance of Baroque wind instruments. For the past 50 years he was an indefatigable explorer of historical musical performance as a musician, instrument maker, professor, and researcher.

This recording lets music lovers hear the unique timbre and musical qualities of an exceptional instrument: an oboe that Pierre Naust made in Paris around 1700. François Couperin’s Concerts, composed at the beginning of the 18th century, perfectly demonstrate the kind of repertoire that would have been played on this Naust instrument.
