“A pianist-painter who turns every musical idea into a beautiful array of colours” (La Presse), Juno award-winning pianist Philip Chiu is acclaimed for his brilliant pianism, sensitive listening and an inviting stage presence that abandons the hermit-pianist trope in favour of openness, authenticity, and connection with audiences. The inaugural winner of the Mécénat Musica Prix Goyer, Chiu has become one of Canada’s leading musicians through his infectious love of music and his passion for creation and communication.
Chiu has concertized extensively as a recitalist, concerto soloist and chamber musician across Canada as well as in France, Japan and the United States. He is a member of the Juno awardwinning piano quartet Ensemble Made in Canada. Other chamber music partners have included Noah Bendix-Balgley, James Ehnes, Bomsori Kim, Johannes Moser, Emmanuel Pahud, Régis Pasquier, and the New Orford String Quartet. He has maintained long-standing duo partnerships with Jonathan Crow and Cameron Crozman.
His 2023 Juno-winning solo album Fables (ATMA Classique)—his most recent recording—is part of a triptych presenting original commissions from distinguished composers such as Barbara Assiginaak and Alice Ping Yee Ho, paired with music by Ravel and Debussy. Other recent album releases include Night Light, with flautist Lara Deutsch (Leaf Music), and Tapeo and Cavatine (ATMA Classique), with Cameron Crozman.
Chiu is represented by Andrew Kwan Artists Management.
