Last week, two of five nominated ATMA Classique recordings received 2020 JUNO Awards, the nation’s highest music honour! Congratulations are in order for composer Ana Sokolovic, and for the Ottawa Bach Choir under the direction of Lisette Canton.
Ana Sokolović is the 2020 JUNO winner for CLASSICAL COMPOSITION OF THE YEAR (her second such consecutive award) for her composition “Evta” performed on the album Sirènes by violinist Andréa Tyniec and the Ensemble contemporain de Montréal directed by Véronique Lacroix. “I am honoured to receive this award and am very happy that the relentless work of the Ensemble contemporain de Montréal and Véronique Lacroix and her team is bearing fruit. The collaboration between Véronique and Andréa Tyniec was extremely inspiring,” said Ana Sokolović.
Under the direction of Lisette Canton, the Ottawa Bach Choir won the 2020 JUNO Award for CLASSICAL ALBUM OF THE YEAR: VOCAL OR CHORAL for their album Handel: Dixit Dominus Bach & Schütz: Motets with countertenor Daniel Taylor.
“We are thrilled to win this prestigious JUNO award and honoured to be recognized for our album, Handel: Dixit Dominus; Bach & Schütz: Motets, produced by ATMA Classique; music that is so close to our hearts. As Founder of the OBC, I am floating on a cloud and so grateful to have helped the choir realize our vision in such a tangible way – and with such a talented team! Thank you to all who were involved in the recording – we’re still pouring the champagne!” said Lisette Canton.
