Nearly twenty years his junior, Désiré-Émile Inghelbrecht nevertheless became a close friend to Debussy and conducted the chorus for the premiere of Le martyre de saint Sébastien. He later founded and conducted the Orchestre National de la Radiodiffusion française. This charming collection of thirty-six short pieces on traditional French children’s melodies was originally composed by the young Inghelbrecht to introduce budding pianists to the beauties of modern harmony. Pianist Lise Boucher gave the North-American premiere of La Nursery in January 2000.
